UNDER THE WATER: BENEATH THE SURFACE

This is where Under the Water first surfaced, born in a single session with all of us in the same room, letting everything we’d been holding in finally spill out. It came from that place where you’re smiling on the outside but drowning underneath, torn between the chaos in your own head and the escape you can almost touch.
We made this page for the ones who’ve felt that weight too, who want to see not just the song but the honesty behind it.
Thank you.

UNDER THE WATER
“Under the Water” is Blush Puppy at their most vulnerable. The track explores the weight of hiding your pain, putting on a face for the world while quietly falling apart inside. It’s about being torn between drowning in your own thoughts and the negative space around you, and the desperate urge to escape to somewhere beautiful but just out of reach.
At its heart, the song is about reaching that breaking point: admitting you can’t keep it all in, letting go, and lifting the weight off your feet, even when you know you’re your own worst enemy. With aching melodies, tense dynamics and the band’s trademark three-way harmonies, “Under the Water” transforms these struggles into something powerful, cathartic and strangely consoling.

One of our favourite lyrics in the song “dig a little deeper to wonderland, paint the roses red for me”which became the foundation for the entire music video. That line instantly sparked the idea of building everything around a Mad Hatter’s tea-party–inspired world. We wanted to pull the viewer into a surreal, off-kilter landscape where objects feel out of place and reality bends just enough to feel dreamlike. It felt like the perfect visual match for the emotions we had while writing the song.
The natural connection between the lyric and Alice in Wonderland gave us the perfect direction for the concept. In the video, Issy takes on the role of the Red Queen, controlling everything that unfolds, our surroundings slowly turning red, the shifting atmosphere, and eventually all of us falling under her influence. This dynamic tied the narrative together and brought the song’s underlying themes to life in a vivid, stylised way.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
This is where Under The Water came from.
It was written when we had writers block and were all a bit frustrated about it, so we tried something new.
We wrote it whilst all in the same room, bouncing ideas off of each other and it came together quicker than any song we'd ever written.
“This is a special one for me because it's the only song from the EP that was written with everyone in the room. The idea was sparked together, and the whole song feels like a unique blend of all of our voices, influences and personal experiences.” - Harry
